Recently I just saw Cary Brothers at World Cafe Live opening for Brandi Carlile. I posted some pictures, as well as a video last week from his concert. I was impressed not only by his songwriting but also with his voice and orchestrations (guitar and cello, Kestrin Pantera). It was a great mix for his pop-infused music. Brothers got his big break when he was featured on the soundtrack, Garden State with his melancholy pop song, Blue Eyes. Cary found his musical voice playing regularly as part of the talented musical community at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, and he has since brought his tremendous live show across America and Canada, touring with such acts as Liz Phair, KT Tunstall, Aqualung, Imogen Heap, and The Fray. Working with these artists, it would be hard not to find his voice.
Who You Are, Cary Brothers' first full-album, will be released late this month. It's perfect mix-tape music. It actually already seems like a mix-tape album, but instead of different artists, this mix-tape is just one artist. Filled with relationship songs ranging from puppy love, true-love to heartbreak, Brothers hits the mark on all the different levels of love and relationships. Apparently he has been through a hellavu lot of love. In the first-track, Jealousy, he yearns for his love to "keep him alive." Ride asks "If I told you you were right, would you take my hand tonight?" Each time he uses his lyrics in perfect tandem with his catchy yet subtle melodies. This is a perfect compilation of Brothers' best music.
He uses very personal experiences in his music and you can feel an honest emotion in each of his songs. The brilliance comes with the fact that each one of those personal experiences is something that everyone can relate to. His lyrics are similar to horoscopes. There is something in there for everyone.
After only a couple of listens I already have some favorites:
1. Jealousy
2. The Glass Parade
3. Honestly (featuring Matt Hales of Aqualung on the piano)
4. If You Were Here
5. Precious Lie
With a CD this good, you should buy the entire thing instead of just buying a few tracks. The CD will be out May 29th 2007. You can pre-order it here and if you are one of the first 500 people ordering it, you will get a signed copy.

Great review -- I saw him in Cleveland and really enjoyed the concert, which predictibly and acceptably sounds the same. I also met him after the show and he was a very friendly, approachable sort. Highly recommended!
I also met him when he played in NYC. Great guy, great music, awesome concert. He deserves all of the success that's going to come to him.
I saw Cary's NYC show with Brandy Carlile too. I loved it! He was totally charming onstage, and the music sounded great. I love that song, "Ride." I have to say that's my favorite off so far.
Can't wait to get the whole album next week.
