Two Brothers: The Kin

Last Friday, we decided to grab some food at World Cafe Live and enjoy the opening band, The Kin. We were headed off to The Polyphonic Spree later in the evening, but instead of the regular restaurant in Northern Liberties, we thought we would try something new. Not only was the food great (though they don't have many menu items) the entertainment was even better.

The Kin are from Adelaide, Australia though they just finished working on their newest record, Rise and Fall, in a 1740s farmhouse in Bucks County. The band consists of two brothers, Isaac and Thorry Koren, who have the swagger of rock stars but looks of surfers. They were joined with the percussionist, Shakerleg, who doesn't use any drum sticks when he plays - just his hands. Using the oversized African drum, djembe and an array of shakers, Shakerleg gives The Kin the added uniqueness and talent this band deserves.

Issac plays piano while Thorry, the younger Koren, plays the guitar. Because they have such similar vocal timbre, it's an incredible sound when they sing harmony. Instantly their first song, Together, gave me goose-bumps with its epic-sounding chorus. Their well-written music was catchy, memorable and filled with emotion. At one point, Thorry, started singing into his guitar. His vocals were transfered from the guitar pick-up to the speakers in an echo-ethereal way. Issac performed on the Australian indigenous instrument, didgeridoo, which was an added bonus to this already perfect performance.

They instantly made me a fan for life. My iPod is stuck on their new record and I just found their previously released album, Tracing on iTunes. I will be going to see them again in August when they come back to Philly. With that strong of a performance, these brothers, should be getting national recognition. They deserve it.
