Concert Review: The Frail @ Voodoo Lounge, 5/30

Photos Taken By: Spencer Williams

Talk about an evening. We had very high expectations for all the bands performing at the Voodoo Lounge Friday night. I mean four of the hottest local bands were there: The Frail, Maldroid, Scissors for Lefty and The Phenomenauts. I've been meaning to catch The Frail and Scissors for Lefty for some time now and as luck would have it, they were performing at the same venue on the same night, five minutes away from my house. I could NOT miss this show.

But, luck was not on their side. At all. Actually, I think everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. I briefly talked to the lead singer of The Frail, Daniel Lannon, after the show and he said, "I think that might have been our worst show ever." He continued, "But it wasn't our fault!" And that my friends, is the whole and complete truth. It wasn't their fault; nothing went right for them. I don't think the sound could have been any worse for their set. The beats were too loud overpowering the vocals and the mix of the electronicism wasn't even mixed properly (too much bass). I don't think Lannon could hear anything out of the monitors on stage so on the last song he jumped off to the floor to stand in front of audience's speakers. Finally, he could hear.

These guys have been headlining shows up in San Francisco and will be embarking on an East Coast tour this summer. Hopefully, after that disaster, these guys will come back to San Jose because they are definitely talented and doing some great things. Lannon mentioned he would make it up to me by "performing in my living room." I might just take him up on that. At least then, their could be a sound-check. Though it ended up to a big nightmare for them (did I mention two of his songs got cut off - completely??) we still got some good news: they will be releasing another EP/album this summer with six completely new songs. We heard a few and they were good (even under the severe circumstances).

If that was your first introduction to The Frail, then you have sadly been mis-introduced because they are one of my favorite local bands. Buy the EP on iTunes and see for yourself.

P.S. The sound guy at VooDoo Lounge should be fired after what happened last night. I think it was the worst sound I have ever seen. Hands down.

Take the jump to see more pictures from Friday night's performance...
