As I was taking a break from the Local Stage, I decided to venture down to the main stage (that was on a giant black asphalt parking lot). Flobots, the Denver hip-hop group, were performing their politically-charged songs. At first, the juxtaposition of the classical viola with the harsh political rap was too much for me. But then, I started listening to the lyrics when they started to rap about bringing "...the troops back from Iraq." I was suddenly hooked.
Rap with rock and classical instruments is new and original. Our ears weren't accustomed to it but it was intriguing. As they sang their song, "Stand Up" about Hurricane Katrina, I couldn't help getting emotional. This band is actually standing up for what they believe in and through their music, they are educating the youth of America. We just hope they are listening.

I was only kind of looking forward to Flobots based on "Handlebars", but after catching this live show, I'm hooked too. I wrote my own review on the Evolving Music blog.
"Handlebars", good a track as it is, was a little overplayed for my taste, but it did convince me to do a little research on the band. I discovered a few things:
1) "Rise" is a far superior track lyrically, and it's also one of the most rocking tunes I've heard in a good six months.
2) This band deserves serious props for their work with Rock the Vote...if you haven't seen Johnny 5's PSA yet, you should really check it out. I know the election is done with, but the message isn't any less important.

All in all a really fantastic group.
