When we arrived at Live 105's BFD we directly went to the Local Stage. We were just happy to get out of the car as we had sat in traffic to park for almost an hour. Luckily we caught the ending of The Federalists' set. Boy, we're we surprised!!
This six-piece rock band from San Francisco formed in 2005 and released their first album almost instantly. Since then, they have been approached by the big whigs but were told they were too "indie" and then the "indie" folks told them they were too mainstream. I think that's what's so great about them. You listen and you can hear remnants of rock n'roll past (like the Beach Boys) and then they combine this classic sound with an updated rock sound. It's the perfect fit.
With four guitars on stage, we thought it would end up to be too "guitar-heavy", but the sound was mixed perfectly against the keyboards, vocals and drums. Luke Franks' husky vocals were spot-on. Overall, their ability to walk the fine line between mainstream and indie-rock was their finest point. It was refreshingly good compared to the extremely mainstream punk we could hear in the distance.
