When I hear about a new band, whether it is a single on the radio, a recommendation from a friend, or a stumble on itunes, I try to give it an honest chance. I will usually buy the single and if it is at all decent, I buy the entire record and try to give it a fair listen before passing my judgment. I have definitely wasted hours this way, listening to absolute trash and also thanked the heavens that I gave an album a shot before passing it up. All of this lengthy explanation serves to preface my experience with the new self-titled album by Lady Antebellum, a country trio that has entered the scenes as of late. Made up of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, the band has experienced smashing success since their album debuted. Their first single, "Love Don't Live Here," I heard on the radio and was mildly interested, but discussion about the band around Nashville prompted me to delve deeper. I ended up buying the entire album. I listened to the thing front to back while hiking and was completely hooked. The more I listened, the more I loved.
I adore the boy/girl lead vocals, the switch off keeps things interesting. The songs, mainly written by members of the band, cover the good-old country topics we all love, but nothing about their sound is old. Driving beats and three part harmonies forced me to turn the ipod up as loud as it would go. My favorites include "Lookin' for a Good Time" as well as "Love's Looking Good On You" co-written by Matt Lopez, band member of Due West, a previously discussed Nashville trio. If I was to download only one song on the album, besides the hit single, I would suggest "Things People Say," track 8 of the record. If you buy one or buy all, be prepared to hit repeat. Hours of wasted time are worth instances like this.
