Throwback Thursday: The Fugees "Fu-Gee-La"

Our new column, Throwback Thursday, will feature songs/bands/albums from an earlier time. We got the name from our dear friend, Erin Wilson, but we have a slightly different take on it. She focuses in on fashion and we, of course, focus in on the music. This column also features our brand new columnist: Fresh Banana Puddin'.

Three syllables, “Fu-Gee-La.”

“Ooh La La La,” is right.

According to the, Recording Industry Association of America, “Fu-Gee-La,” is certified gold. “Fu-Gee-La,” was the first single off of the Fugees’ sophomore album, The Score and the highest selling.

Some people were just meant to stir up controversy together, Romeo and Juliet, Thelma and Louise, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel. There isn’t a better way to get other people’s panties in a bunch, than through the musical genre of hip-hop. So, yes, the group did do some sampling for their production, however, they unfolded an original masterpiece. The Fugees will forever give hip-hop a good name.

Their album debuted in 1996, went multi-platinum in the United States by 1997 and is still selling in stores today. The group also won two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album and their ballad, “Killing Me Softly.”

With a combination of phenomenal chemistry, vocals, production and rap talent, The Fugees set the bar and created a hip-hop classic.

“Ready or Not,” The Fugees came, they found us and they made us want them…
