Our column, Throwback Thursday, will feature songs/bands/albums from an earlier time. We got the name from our dear friend, Erin Wilson, but we have a slightly different take on it. She focuses in on fashion and we, of course, focus in on the music. This column also features our columnist: Fresh Banana Puddin'.
I bet there are millions of women out there who are wondering the same thing as Janet Jackson did in her 1986 single, “What Have You Done For Me Lately?” Janet's, “Ms Jackson if you’re nasty,” gave a voice to all the women out there fed up with their man’s feet on their coffee table. However, she did it with funk, a music video and live at the Grammy’s.
The single, “What Have You Done For Me Lately” off of her third album, Control topped the charts and gained her two Grammy nominations for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. The album, Control, was her first debut since detached from her manager father Joseph Jackson. In fact, she co-produced the single “What Have You Done For Me Lately” with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
The single jump-started Janet’s solo career and whoever stood her up back in the 80’s must feel pretty stupid right about now.
