Mp3 of the Day: Dungen "Sätt Att Se"

Dungen's new single "Sätt Att Se" is perhaps more nearly akin to a jazz-influenced hip-hop instrumental than any previous track from the group's established progressive pop-rock catalogue. Recent press for the impending album 4 suggests that their synthesis of orchestrated rock has sheered internally across pop grooves and cinematic slow-burners, allowing each facet of their sound to shine distinctly.

"Sätt Att Se" distinguishes itself from earlier hits like "Panda" with trembling violins, breaking drums, and a sinuous guitar that curls like smoke in a club. Gustav Ejstes' hip-hop songwriting background is evident in this structure, though his own intermittent vocals on the track sustain their characteristically prolonged drawl (think a Swedish Thom Yorke). While the single sounds enjoyably like Dungen covering Radiohead covering Tortoise, it represents only the promising first track of an album that is said to include both atmospheric jazz and jam-ready pop.
