Innerpartysystem comes out with their debut self-titled album this week. While writing for this blog I've come across a lot of music I probably wouldn't normally have listened to. Innerpartysystem is a classic example of this. Their music is in line with an electronic sound--there seems to be a trend of this sound these days but they have catchy lyrics and hooks. Right now I am particularly fond of "The Way We Move." If Depeche Mode and Daft Punk had babies, they would sound like Innerpartysystem.
Jennifer Hudson is also debuting her self-titled album this week. I'm surprised it took her this long to come out with one, but she was busy getting an Oscar award for Dreamgirls. Of course, her voice is amazing. She has some nice slow R&B jams as well as some poppin' dance hits. Although she definitely has her own sound, the strength and power in her voice is a lot like Beyoncè. Her MySpace page is pretty careful with how much they let out, but her song "If This Isn't Love" is beautiful. In general, her range is flawless - she can float through her head voice back to chest voice effortlessly. Finally, we have an American Idol who should truly be idolized.
Jack's Mannequin comes out with their new album, The Glass Passenger, today as well. I'm not familiar with any of their other albums, but they have a very laid back sound on this album. A lot of instrumentals, especially in "Annie Use Your Telescope"-- I definitely hear violins (though they might be synth). I love when artists get creative and think outside the record label box.
Dungen comes out with their fourth album this week, aptly titled 4. They are a Swedish band and they describe themselves as rock/psychedelic/funk. They do sound very classic rock with the guitar taking the spotlight on some of their songs. It might be crazy, but I hear the Beatles, circa the late sixties during the LSD phase. I like that their rock side doesn't overpower the vocals or the other more subtle sounds that they have laid onto the tracks.
On a side note, Happy 50th Birthday to Miles Davis' album Kind of Blue. If you don't know it, you are missing out, hardcore.
Other notable releases this week:
Ani DiFranco - Red Letter Year
Ben Folds - Way Too Normal
U2 - Under Blood Red Sky
T.I. - Paper Trail
