Throwback Thursday: Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Our column, Throwback Thursday, will feature songs/bands/albums from an earlier time. We got the name from our dear friend, Erin Wilson, but we have a slightly different take on it. She focuses in on fashion and we, of course, focus in on the music. This column also features our columnist: Fresh Banana Puddin'.

It’s hard to say whether or not anyone ever completely understood the lyrics to the popular 1990-grunge/rock band Nirvana’s song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

However, who cares? The song and the band rocked!

With lots of media attention and plenty of controversy, grunge and rock music introduced itself to Generation X setting off the early 90s. Nirvana being one of the many bands among, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden to name a few, who challenged their audience and dominated MTV and radios.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit,” off of Nirvana’s sophomore album Nevermind, put the group into mainstream and their career excelled. The band sold over 400,000 copies a week in the United States and soared to the top of the Billboard charts.

Here we are now, [Nirvana] entertain us!
