Mp3 of the Day: Honey Claws "Shout Out"

Contemporary pseudo-Tropicália has recently experienced critical and commercial success in the form of releases from artists like Beck, El Guincho, and Animal Collective. Now, based in America's south rather than South America, the Texas group Honey Claws similarly synthesizes carnivalesque strings, rhythmic snares and elements of avant-garde noise rock. Imagine the sort of brightly repeating electric guitar refrain that might open a tourism commercial; then imagine the whole scene disrupted by a hoarse street side orator who can barely contain himself or the escalating cacophony that he instigates.

Like the all-inclusive antropofagia that continues to define Animal Collective and other collaborative ensembles, a varying amalgamation of genres ranging from noise to pop is apparent in both the single "Shout Out" and the whole of the self-titled EP. Discordant, yet quickly stuck in your head, Honey Claws' sound inhabits its own space and time somewhere at the interstices of 1960s Brazil and modern day Austin.
