New Tunes Tuesday #33

Outside the comfort zone of the United States this week. It's a British/Aussie invasion!

From the land down under--a.k.a. Australia--The Panics make their debut on New Tunes Tuesday this week. Their album Cruel Guards is said to be a "bunch with immediate appeal and lasting beauty." The lead singers voice is rough and grainy but in a sultry and seductive way. His voice combined with the interesting array of instrumental set-up lures you into the arms of their songs. Their single, "Don't Fight It", is as lovely as all their other songs. A catchy mantra usually means that everyone can relate to the lyrics. This is no exception.

Travis' album, Ode to J Smith also comes out this week. The guitar intro on their song "Long Way Down" is a total hook. Actually, most of their songs grab you hook, line and sinker. They have a British/European sound to them, which is always pleasing to my ear. Apparently this album
was written in 5 weeks an recorded in only two weeks. Their passion and dedication to creating flowing sounds is truly evident in their musics resonance.

Rachel Yamagata has a much different sound than the others this week. Her song Elephants is a heart-wrenching ballad that almost makes my heart bleed. She sounds a bit like Imogen Heap and Priscilla Ahn, which is definitely not a bad thing. Her voice is unique to my ears and the music supporting her voice is full of intent. Her song "Worn Me Down" is interesting because the vocals are on a slower beat than the actual music; it gives us a panic'd feel. Lovely.

When you take a look at Jon McLaughlin's MySpace page, he is obviously a hit with the ladies throughout the country. Good looking, plays the piano and he sings? A triple threat. However, this guy is more than just some good looks. His sweet voice sings lovely love songs, and not always the slow and steady kind. Definitely someone to look out for.

Margot and the Nuclear So So's also comes out with their album today. Read MCMB's review of it here.

Well that's it for this week. Enjoy!!

The Kin, comprised of Australian brothers Issac and Thorry Koren, delivers a solid rock sound with the added Australian flair that includes digerradoos and rhythmic percussionist "Shakerleg" who plays just with his hands. We were instantly impressed when we, on the spur of the moment, saw these guys play at World Cafe Live this past summer.

McLaughlin increased his public image by providing music for the NBC comedy Scrubs, episode My Conventional Wisdom on May 10,2007. McLaughlin's song, Human was included in the episode. The same song appeared at the end of the episode The Walk-In of Ghost Whisperer. Beautiful Disaster can also be heard in the hit TV series A Little Thing Called Life in the season one episode titled The Greatest and Worst Halloween Ever.
