Beginning in the sort of absurdist suburban neighborhood last seen on Nickelodeon's Pete and Pete (think band member dressed as sea captain sitting in a tree), and ending in a similarly vintage space station, the video for Obi Best's "It's Because of People Like You" progresses with overtly incongruous rapidity. Yet, like REM's Michael Stipe appearing as Captain Scrummy, the group uses this drolly eclectic environment to frame their equally peculiar songwriting.
Not since Geggy Tah's "Whoever You Are" thanked its anonymous subject for allowing the singer to change lanes has a group so investigated the etiquette surrounding car-based interaction, as Alex Lilly's (the bird and the bee) reception of an angry note regarding her parking job. It leads to her own wondering how anything "in the way I park/can warrant such a cold remark." The video's fast cuts between strange characters and two disparate locales can slightly dilute its singular effect, but perhaps these seemingly separate aesthetic elements manifest the varied inspirations of Obi Best's music itself.
