CD Review: I am...Sasha Fierce, Beyoncè

Beyoncès’ new album, I am...Sasha Fierce, was released this past Tuesday. Both the regular and deluxe edition are split into two discs and each disc has it’s own feel. The first disc has an R&B and mellow feel to it. Many of the songs have a heartbroken sound to them, which is surprising because Beyoncè married rapper Jay-Z this year. Although the songs are slow and melodic, they lack much depth. There doesn’t seem to be much passion behind any of her emotional highs and lows.

Unfortunately for Beyoncè fans, this theme carries over into the second disc, which holds all of the dance hits, including her most recent single “Single Ladies (Put a ring on it).” Although it is catchy and entertaining to ride around town to, it is your basic, run of the mill Billboard Top 40 fluff hit. I predict her next dance hit to be “Diva,” which, again, is pure fluff. Beyoncè claims, in her song, that a diva is the woman’s equivalent of a hustler. This could even been seen as a response to hubby Jay-Z’s song “Dirt off Your Shoulder,” but it’s about three years too late.

Beyoncè is known for her vocal range and the audible passion she puts behind her lyrics. But I felt that this album was truly lacking all of those positive attributes and that she came out with this album just for the sake of coming out with an album. I definitely don’t deny that Beyoncè has the chops to produce a good album, full of well written and constructed songs (everyone is allowed a few filler songs), but I can’t say that she delivered on this album.

Overall grade: 6 out of 10
