For any performer who has ever been afflicted with a bad case of stage fright, has agonized over how to start a show and get the audience hooked from the get-go, this video (“Chicken”) is a must see. In this expertly crafted solo guitarist Merick Long of San Francisco indie-blues group The Dodos first sucks you in with a few bluesy strums, quieting the hall, and clearly introduces the theme. With pacing and command, the song builds in complexity and energy, faster and faster strokes underlying the crisp theme, maintained with clarity throughout.
Before long he’s launched into a full-fledged barrage of virtuosic blues guitar that impresses without showing off and engages without overpowering. When you watch it look at the audience: they’re hypnotized. Great way to start a show.
