Mp3/Video of the Day: The Volunteers

The Volunteers' Spectrophilia balances its deliberately bare rock aesthetic with a penchant for swaggering between consanguineous styles ranging from the sardonic folk of "Danger Everywhere You Turn" to the misanthropic "Hoogabooga" that plays like an anti-Franz Ferdinand. Representing both ends of these sub-genre travels, the mp3 single "Rock and Roll (Will Kill You)" along with the video for "F*ck My Ghost" demonstrate the band's clever simplicity and subtly versatile indelicacies.

"Rock and Roll (Will Kill You)" self-consciously foregrounds the traditional rock chord progressions of its titular genre while a vainglorious chorus exhorts "let's act illogical / you wouldn't understand / you need a college degree just to do the math." The appropriately titled "F*ck My Ghost" is slightly more somber in its sarcasm, as vocalist Dan Goddard consents over strummed acoustic guitar and even backing keys, "when I die / if you want / you can f*ck my ghost / it'd be nice to know that I can still get laid." Both feature enough lyrical and visual detail to continue The Volunteers' occupation of some liminal space between sophomoric satire and talented homage.
