Tonight in Rock: Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, Oasis @ The Oracle, 12/3

Since the multi-Grammy nominated Gold (2001), Ryan Adams has maintained his ability to create effective contemporary rock while also allowing himself time for stylistic diversions. His recent albums with The Cardinals, including this year's Cardinology, may represent similarly new professional and personal stability, but his Top 10 of 2008 list for Filter evidences a continued diversity of influences from Mariah Carey to Testament. Despite the difficulty of balancing metal-genre attitudes with a generally country rock sound, critical reception has been largely complimentary across Adams' catalog and Cardinology seems to represent another strong note.

Though those who go to see Adams and The Cardinals might be surprised to realize that Oasis is even still together, the group, including both Gallagher brothers, has been working consistently since 2005's Don't Believe the Truth to evolve beyond "Champagne Supernova." Their latest, Dig Out Your Soul, seems to be meeting receptive audiences, and Noel Gallagher has already alluded to the existence of demo recordings for its successor.

Tonight's show at Oakland's Oracle Arena is the first of the two bands' national tour, also stopping tomorrow night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Tickets start at $37.75 and are available through Ticketmaster.

My coworker who attended the show said that Liam Gallagher of Oasis briefly walked off stage after the first or second song due to problems with microphone volume levels. In his honor, we watched videos of the MTV Unplugged when he refused to play and instead watched Noel finish the set while he drank beers in the balcony.
