Dirty Clubs and Gritty Demos, Vol 23 - Hypernova live at Webster Hall

Saturday night while there was a bomb scare in Times Square Iranian indie musicians, Hypernova captured their audience at Webster Hall. A dark room with strategic colored strobes only illuminating pieces of the band at any moment set the mood to Hypernova’s set.

I have been listening to Hypernova’s new album, Through the Chaos, since I reviewed it a few weeks ago, and what struck me was their embodiment of their music. The album is full, layered, and natural. Now this could have been a product of excellent mixing and mastering or it could be the natural chemistry of the band. Their live show takes the vibe of the album and magnifies the intensity; it is definitely the chemistry of the band that creates their powerful sound. From Kami warming up on his drums to the feedback as they walked off the stage one by one, there was never a drop in energy or presence. Hypernova’s set was a no-nonsense musical assault. After thanking the audience for coming, the drums and synthesizer reverberated through the crowd, their powerful chords and intoxicating voice pulled the audience into their world, inciting everyone to dance.

The crowd sang along with most songs and really let loose on “Fairy Tales” but through out the set, it became clear that the band was not so much there to entertain the audience, but to invite them into this alternate world. And the audience was more than willing to come with them.
